Over time, constant movements of the muscles in the face can cause fine lines and wrinkles to develop. Botox is often the first and best option to counteract these early signs of aging. Also known as “botulinum toxin type A,” Botox® is the most popular injectable in the world. Dr. Sarah Mess trusts Botox® at her Columbia, Maryland practice to provide consistent and dependable results for individuals who wish to rejuvenate their facial appearance and eliminate signs of aging.

Ideal Candidates for Botox®

The best Botox® candidates are in good physical health and do not have any severe allergies or history of neuromuscular diseases. Individuals should have realistic expectations about the procedure and wish to eliminate one or more of the following imperfections:

  • Wrinkles on the forehead
  • Fine lines at the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Creases around the mouth
  • Moderate to severe frown lines between the brows

During your consultation, Dr. Mess will evaluate the appearance of your face and help determine which areas can be improved with Botox®.

Preparing for Botox® Treatment

Before undergoing treatment, patients will need to disclose information about any medications and medical conditions they have. If individuals have sensitive skin, applying ice packs to the face will reduce blood flow and lessen the chances of bruising after the Botox® treatment is complete. There is minimal discomfort associated with Botox® injections. During your consultation, Dr. Mess will provide complete details on how to prepare for your procedure.

The Botox® Treatment

Each Botox® procedure is done on an outpatient basis and takes just a few minutes to complete. Before the Botox® injections are administered, the face should be free of any impurities, including makeup. A topical anesthetic will be applied to minimize discomfort from the injection(s). Then Dr. Mess will administer Botox® using a very fine needle, which is inserted directly into the targeted muscles of the face.

Recovery After Botox®

After the Botox® treatment is complete, the injected area(s) may temporarily appear red. This is normal, and skin irritation usually subsides in just a few hours. Dr. Mess may also instruct patients to do the following during the first 24 to 48 hours:

  • Avoid touching the treated sites in order to prevent Botox® from spreading to other parts of the face
  • Limit physical activity and exercise
  • Do not consume large amounts of alcohol
  • Avoid taking blood thinning medications, such as aspirin
  • Patients should avoid laying down for the first 4 hours post procedure

There is no recovery time associated with Botox® injections. In fact, some patients choose to come during their lunch break for treatment and return to work right after the appointment. Dr. Mess strives to provide each patient with a quick and safe procedure so they can return to their normal routine as soon as possible.

How much does Botox® cost

The total cost of Botox® treatment is determined by the number of areas treated and the number of units required to achieve the desired results in each area. Dr. Mess charges $14 per unit, and she uses only authentic Botox® manufactured by Allergan. Be sure and ask about Brilliant Distinctions Loyalty points for all your Allergan products. The savings can be significant.

* Botox is often performed in conjunction with dermal fillers such as Voluma, Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero, or Radiesse as part of a liquid facelift.

Results After Botox®

Botox® begins working to relax the muscles as soon as the procedure is complete. The final results of Botox® become apparent after about a week and last up to four months. Patients are amazed with the results that Botox® injections provide and typically experience a boost in confidence knowing that they appear noticeably more youthful.
