Breast augmentation (“augmentation mammaplasty”) is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures worldwide, and breast augmentation in Maryland mirrors that trend. Dr. Sarah Mess specializes in breast enhancement in her Columbia, MD practice where she combines technical skills and an artist’s touch to produce superior results. Ideal Candidates for Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery suits a wide range of patients and body types. Candidates for breast augmentation should be at least 18 years of age and in good overall health. During your consultation, Dr. Sarah Mess will evaluate your natural body type and breast shape and discuss the best options to achieve your breast enhancement goals. Patients should have realistic expectations and goals regarding the outcome of their procedure, but today’s wide choice of breast implant types make breast augmentation a great option for more women than ever before. Breast augmentation is used to do the following:
- Achieve larger, fuller breasts
- Provide balance to your frame and improve the fit of clothing and swimsuits
- Balance asymmetrical or uneven breasts (congenital or reconstructive)
- Restore breast fullness and firmness after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight-loss
- Achieve overall better appearance and confidence in your image
Type of Implant
There are two general types of breast implants: saline implants consisting of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saltwater solution, and silicone implants made of a silicone shell pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Patients must be at least 22 years old to undergo augmentation with silicone gel implants. Both saline and silicone implants come in a variety of sizes and profiles and can be either smooth or textured. The FDA recently approved shaped, anatomical, highly cohesive silicone gel implants (sometimes referred to as “Gummy Bear” implants). Allergan’s Natrelle 410, Mentor’s Memory Shape, and Sientra’s shaped implants are examples of these newest breast implant options. Each type of implant has its advantages.
During your consultation, Dr. Mess will learn about your interests and will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of saline, silicone gel, shaped, and round implants. Patients will try on sizers and review breast procedure photographs and implant information with Dr. Mess in her office. We provide extensive resources and education so the patient can determine which type of breast implant is best suited to achieve their breast enhancement goals.
Preparing for Breast Augmentation Surgery
During your preoperative appointment, Dr. Mess will discuss what you should expect prior to undergoing a breast augmentation as well as what to expect after breast augmentation. In general, patients should refrain from smoking at least four weeks before and after surgery. Patients should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements two weeks prior to surgery as they can increase bleeding. Dr. Mess will provide you with detailed instructions on how to properly prepare for breast augmentation and care for yourself post-procedure. Our comprehensive breast augmentation management helps ensure the best possible results for your surgery and long-term enhancement results.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
The breast augmentation procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with the patient under general anesthesia. The procedure is often combined with other cosmetic breast and body procedures, such as a breast lift, mommy makeover, or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). One of the following incision techniques will be used for your procedure, which will depend on your specific needs and preferences:
Inframammary Incision – A small horizontal incision is made underneath each breast, at the fold.
Transaxillary Incision – Inconspicuous incisions are made in the armpits, in the natural “folds” of skin.
Periareolar Incision – Tiny incisions are made around the edge (or just within) the areola.

Recovery: What to Expect after Your Breast Augmentation
After the surgery is complete, the breasts are covered with waterproof bandages and a special compression garment to minimize swelling.
Patients are advised to apply ice packs to the breasts and relax for a few days after the procedure.
Patients may experience soreness in the breasts during the first week of recovery, but prescribed pain medication can be taken to alleviate these symptoms.
Patients will be seen in the office for a postoperative visit in a couple of days.
Patients can usually return to work after a few days but should refrain from any strenuous exercise or activity for about two to three weeks.
Regular follow-up continues for two to three weeks, and patients are typically scheduled for postoperative photos at two months after the procedure.
Breast augmentation recovery time varies with each individual. Scars will diminish within a few months, and topical silicone sheets will help speed the process. Patients are encouraged to discuss their progress with Dr. Mess. Our goal is to make your recovery as quick and safe as possible so you can get back to your life and enjoy the benefits of your enhanced and refined figure.
How much does Breast Augmentation cost
The total cost of breast augmentation consists of several fees, including:
- Surgeon’s fee
- Operating room fees
- Anesthesia fees
- Prescriptions for medication
- Post-surgical garments
- Scar management treatment
Fee is a consideration for any cosmetic procedure, but it is important to remember that your ultimate satisfaction will be based on a lot more than the cost of the procedure. Dr. Mess combines training, experience, and dedicated care to provide exceptional results for patients seeking breast augmentation. She understands a woman’s body and takes pride in helping women from the Columbia, Baltimore, and Bethesda areas achieve their cosmetic breast enhancement goals.
*The total cost will be affected if an additional procedure, such as a breast lift, tummy tuck, or “Mommy Makeover,” is performed in combination with breast augmentation.
Results after Breast Augmentation Surgery
The results of breast augmentation are immediately noticeable after surgery is complete and will improve over the coming weeks. Women usually feel more confident in their everyday appearance and are more excited to wear certain styles of clothing, such as bikinis during the summer.
