What Is CoolSculpting Fat Removal?
CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis, is the non-invasive, non-surgical alternative to liposuction that freezes and eliminates fat while leaving the surrounding tissues unaffected. CoolSculpting technology takes advantage of the fact that fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin, muscle and other surrounding tissues and this is the core science behind the CoolSculpting procedure. In fact, with the right treatment plan, a skilled provider and multiple treatment cycles, CoolSculpting can produce results comparable to those of liposuction.2 CoolSculpting allows us to truly sculpt a new you by targeting stubborn fat to produce liposuction like results with no needles, no surgery, and no downtime.4 Dr. Mess has the newest Cool Advantage and Cool Advantage Plus applicators, so we can pick the best applicator for you and use two machines to DualSculpt® and complete your treatment in a fraction of the time!
Best Candidates for CoolSculpting
The ideal candidates for CoolSculpting are people in general good health that are within 20-30 lbs of their target weight and have at least one inch of fat they can pinch. Nearly everyone accumulates pockets of fat over time and these become more difficult to get rid of as we get older. Work, children, life, ESPN and the couch all get in the way of getting and keeping our ideal figures. Problem fat doesn’t care where you work or if you are a man or a woman. The good news is, neither does CoolSculpting.
Who’s Not A Good Candidate for CoolSculpting
Patients that have visceral fat—a type of fat stored in the abdominal cavity and often associated with the stereotypical beer gut—are not ideal CoolSculpting candidates. If you have a large stomach, but it’s hard to the touch, we will need to look at other options to help achieve your goals. However, if you can pinch an inch, or two, or more…CoolSculpting may be just the answer you have been looking for.
CoolSculpting is successful on larger patients as well, but is not intended for people with obesity.3 While patients who are more than 30 lbs above their target weight can safely undergo CoolSculpting treatments, they will likely require more than one session to achieve the best results.
What’s the Difference Between CoolSculpting and Liposuction?
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure performed in the comfort of one of our treatment rooms in approximately 30 minutes per area. Coolsculpting can reduce targeted fat by up to 25% with less risk than liposuction and no downtime. Liposuction, on the other hand, is a surgical procedure performed in the operating room under general or local anesthesia.
CoolSculpting is a safe and natural way to get rid of unwanted stubborn fat on your abdomen, flanks, thighs, bra rolls, arms, back, double chin and other problem areas. If you can pinch it, we can CoolSculpt it!
Alternative Procedures to CoolSculpting
A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure done to remove excess skin from the abdomen. Separated muscles can also be repaired. Tummy tuck surgery is best for patients who have skin laxity and excess fat after weight loss or pregnancy.
Liposuction removes fat through small incisions using a hollow tube called a cannula and a vacuum device. This treatment can be used on many areas of the body including the arms, back, abdomen, and thighs.
Using electromagnetic energy, Emsculpt® causes the muscles in the treatment site (typically the abdomen, buttocks, arms or thighs) to contract, toning and strengthening the muscles while also eliminating fat.

The Right Applicator and the Right Plan
We have every applicator available and a dedicated CoolSculpting staff. Our team has the knowledge and the resources to create effective treatment plans that deliver outstanding Coolsculpting results.
The CoolMini applicator was introduced following the 2015 FDA clearance for treatment of submental fat. The CoolMini treats double chin fat and other small areas such as the bra roll. It’s an exciting option for people looking for a non-surgical way to target double chin fat. CoolMini treatments take only 45 minutes to complete!
The CoolSmooth applicator was introduced in April of 2014. This “flat” applicator is designed to treat non-pinchable areas of fat such as inner and outer thighs. CoolSculpting received FDA clearance for fat reduction of the thighs in the spring of 2014, so don’t be thigh shy anymore!
The Cool Advantage applicator uses a variety of profiles to give you the ideal treatment. Straight or curved profiles allow for customized treatment plans targeting stubborn fat. Cool Advantage treatments are complete in 30 minutes.
Cool Advantage Plus
The Cool Advantage Plus is the largest of the applicators. It can treat approximately 2.5X the area of the other applicators. It is most often used to treat and debulk the stomach area, but it is also well suited to other areas, particularly on larger patients. Cool Advantage Plus treatments take only 45 minutes!
The Cool Petite was designed specifically for arms, bat wings, and other small treatment areas. It’s the perfect size for areas that trouble us the most.
VECTRA® 3D Imaging
Our office utilizes VECTRA® 3D Imaging to provide a high-resolution, three-dimensional simulation of how your results may appear. During your consultation with Dr. Mess, your preferences and goals will be discussed to determine which procedures can achieve your desired results. You will have multiple photos taken from various angles, and the images are then transferred to our computer system. Using these photos, a three-dimensional model is created, and your simulated procedure results are added to display the expected outcome. This process allows a visual aspect for more accurate treatment plans and procedure result estimates.
CoolSculpting is unlike any other fat reduction treatment on the market today. The science behind it is proven. Dr. Mess and her staff have extensive training and years of experience with the technology. You can be assured that you are receiving the right advice, treatment plan, and applicator when you choose CoolSculpting with Dr. Sarah Mess.
The CoolSculpting Consultation
The first step in your CoolSculpting journey is scheduling a consultation with one of our Coolsculpting specialists in our Columbia, Maryland office. Our specialists conduct an in-depth review of your cosmetic goals and medical history to make sure Coolsculpting is right for you. You’ll get answers to the questions you may have about Coolsculpting and have the opportunity to talk about other treatments of interest. We’ll make sure you know what to expect on the day of the procedure, as well as when you can expect to see your Coolsculpting results.
Preparing for CoolSculpting
Wear comfortable clothing on your procedure day. A typical cycle takes about a half hour to complete. You can get up between treatment cycles but you will need to plan on staying put for 30-45 minutes at a time depending on the applicator, so plan accordingly. Bring something to read, schedule your conference call (yes, people have done it) or enjoy Netflix on our big screen. That’s it: Dress comfortably, show up and relax.
The CoolSculpting Procedure
All CoolSculpting treatments are performed at Dr. Sarah Mess’s office in Columbia, MD. During the procedure you will either sit or lie down depending on what areas are being CoolSculpted. At the start of the treatment we will mark the areas being treated and a gel pad will be applied to the area. This protects the skin and provides lubrication to help get a better draw in the applicator.
When the applicator is applied you will feel a slight vacuum as your fatty tissue is drawn into the applicator. The new applicators are much more comfortable than the original applicators. In 5-10 minutes the area will become numb. There may be some tingling or aching, but these sensations typically subside in the first 10 minutes.
After approximately 30 minutes the cycle will be complete. The vacuum will be turned off and the applicator removed. At this point you should have a “frozen stick of butter” where the applicator was. This area will be massaged to help regain sensation and speed recovery.
What is the CoolSculpting® Treatment?
Immediately post procedure the treated area will appear red… and it will be cold! Some patients report tingling and stinging in the treatment area while others experience dulled sensation. These symptoms normally resolve themselves within a few hours to days, but they can last for several weeks after treatment.
CoolSculpting recovery symptoms are usually well managed with a combination of over the counter medications and ice… Yes, ice. It may seem counter intuitive, but the initial treatment for most injuries is to ice and elevate the area, and your CoolSculpting treatment just injured a considerable amount of fat cells throughout the treatment area.
Some patients see results in as little as three weeks, but most see the best results after two to three months and final results are achieved after about four months. We encourage patients to compare the results of CoolSculpting to Liposuction and Tummy Tuck surgery. These are all effective treatments, but each provides different results and requires different amounts of recovery and downtime. With the right treatment plan, Coolsculpting patients can achieve liposuction like results without surgery or down time.
CoolSculpting is considered safe and has minimal side effects, such as pain, redness, and swelling and in rare cases surface irregularities.5
How Much Does CoolSculpting® Cost and How Long Does It Take?
CoolSculpting® costs are based on the applicator and the number of cycles you choose. As a starting point patients should budget $2,000 to $4,000 for their initial treatment package, but you may want more applicators. It really depends on how many areas you want to treat and how big of a reduction you want. The good news is that larger packages qualify for significant discounts off the per applicator price, so be sure to ask our staff how to take advantage of our packages. A package of 10 or more applicators offers the best results at the lowest costs.
Another factor to consider is time. Naturally, patients want to maximize results and minimize downtime.DualSculpting® combined with our new Cool Advantage applicators drastically reduces treatment times for our patients. Through preferred package pricing and shorter treatment times, we offer the best value to our patients.
Patients should discuss their goals during the consultation and see what package is best suited to achieve their personal goals. Our package pricing is very competitive.
