Male Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid Surgery for Men

Male blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery for men) is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures for men, and it is growing in popularity every year. Men know that the eyes are often one of the first features to show signs of aging, and the development of wrinkles and droopy eyelids can cause men to look more tired and older than they feel. Eyelid Surgery can reverse the signs of aging in the eyes by removing excess skin and fatty tissue.

Although many of the same principles apply there are differences between eyelid surgery for men and women. The shape and contour of men’s eyebrows and eyelids differ from those of women. Their muscles tend to be heavier and their skin thicker. Dr. Sarah Mess understands these subtle differences and knows what it takes to provide the desired results for her male blepharoplasty patients.

Ideal Candidates for Male Eyelid Surgery

The best candidates for eyelid surgery are in good overall health and do not have any eye conditions or allergies that would impair healing. Although the procedure is generally performed on individuals who are 35 years of age or older, eyelid surgery can be performed on patients who are younger if surgery is needed. Candidates should have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure and desire to correct one or more of the following problems:

  • Sagging upper eyelids
  • Wrinkles underneath or around the eyes
  • Puffiness and dark spots beneath the eyelids
  • Excess skin in the lower eyelids

Preparing for Male Eyelid Surgery

In many cases, a medical evaluation will be needed in order to make sure that patients have no persistent allergies or other eye problems. During a consultation, individuals will need to tell Dr. Mess if they are on any medications since this could have an adverse affect on the results of eyelid surgery. Patients will also need to stop smoking and taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin well in advance of the procedure, as this could cause complications during surgery and impair healing.

The Male Eyelid Procedure

There are many Eyelid Surgery techniques that can be performed to improve the upper and lower eyelids. During your consultation with Dr. Mess, you will discuss which aspects of the eyes you wish to improve and she will determine which technique(s) will provide you with the best results.

Lower Eyelids

To make the lower eyelids appear more youthful and rejuvenated, Dr. Mess will make an incision underneath the lower eyelashes. Through this incision, excess skin and fat are removed to eliminate the puffy appearance that exists and to provide a taut, more attractive appearance. In some instances where only fat tissue needs to be removed, Dr. Mess may make an incision in the lower eyelid that will be virtually unnoticeable. After the desired look is achieved, the incisions are sutured.

Upper Eyelids

To restore a revitalized look to the upper eyelids, Dr. Mess will make an inconspicuous incision in the natural fold of the upper eyelid, which allows her to remove excess skin and fat tissue. Occasionally, fat may be added back into certain areas of the eyelid to form a more attractive contour. Once a better appearance is achieved, Dr. Mess will close the incisions with sutures.

Recovery After Male Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery recovery requires patients to keep their head elevated for the first few days to minimize swelling and bruising. A special lubricating ointment as well as cold compresses will be applied to the eye area to speed up recovery. Your vision may be somewhat blurry and your eyes may feel sensitive to light for a couple of days, but eye drops can help alleviate these symptoms. Patients usually return to work about a week after surgery, once the sutures are removed. There can be localized bruising, but this usually resolves itself within two weeks. To maintain the results of eyelid surgery, sunscreen and sunglasses should be worn to protect against over-exposure to the sun or wind.

How Much Does Male Eyelid Surgery Cost

The total cost of an eyelid procedure depends on various factors, including:

  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Surgical facility costs
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Post-surgery garments
  • Medical tests

Fee is a consideration for any cosmetic procedure, but it is important to remember that your ultimate satisfaction will be based on a lot more than fee. Dr. Mess combines the training, experience and dedicated care to provide exceptional male eyelid surgery results. She takes pride in helping men from the Columbia, Baltimore, and Bethesda areas achieve their aesthetic goals.

Results after Male Eyelid Surgery

The results of male eyelid surgery will not be immediately noticeable once surgery is complete. As swelling subsides over the next 5-10 days and as the eyes adjust to their new contour, patients are usually very satisfied with the results of the procedure. By providing a youthful and more alert appearance to the eye area, men also tend to feel more confident about themselves knowing that their eyes appear more alert and instep with how they feel.
